Flower pots and food

Plant pots and bowls made of clay have been used for many years to store or prepare food. There are many recipe books on the market that deal with baking and cooking in clay pots. We therefore consider it necessary to clarify the legal aspects of handling food in an item that is not actually intended to be used as a dish or food container.

The legal framework is provided by the German Food and Feed Code (Lebensmittel-, Bedarfsgegenstände- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch - LFGB): Items that “... are intended to come into contact with food ...” are defined there in §2 para. 6 sentence 1 as so-called “consumer goods”, within the meaning of Article 1 para. 2 of Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 of the European Parliament.

This obligation to declare conformity is also not applicable if our articles are used for purposes for which they are not intended, e.g. if someone bakes bread in a flower pot, prepares a salad in a planting bowl or bakes and serves a pizza on a flower pot saucer.

1. Nevertheless, we also declare that all our products are free of harmful ingredients or ingredients that could be harmful to consumers. After the firing process at 1000 °C, there are no substances or compounds in the finished product that could have a negative impact on the health of consumers if the containers are used as intended. There are also no compounds and substances classified as particularly hazardous on the SVHC list of the European Chemicals Agency ECHA (as of July 2012) present or detectable in the raw materials and end products we use. All glazes used by us are free of lead and cadmium additives. The compounds contained in the fired ceramic product, some of which are water-soluble, are all of natural mineral origin. They contain neither heavy metals nor substances that are harmful to health.

2. all natural red clay articles from our production program can come into contact with food without any danger. The basic raw materials are natural clays and loams. However, certain product variations are provided with mineral additives. For safety reasons, these items should not come into contact with food. See point 4.

3. The above applies equally to the cultivation and consumption of the edible or herbal plants commonly used in our products. A possible negative influence on the plants through potting soils, fertilizers or other substances used by the consumer cannot be assessed by us here.

4. The following articles from our production are not suitable for contact with food:

• Vessels of the clay varieties “umbra” and “basalt” containing mineral additives include additives whose safety regarding contact with food cannot be warranted by us. We therefore generally advise against using these products for anything other than pure planting purposes, particularly against contact with food.
• Articles with a powder coating (decorative pots and planters in the *Ceramano* colors series) are intended exclusively for floristic purposes, as the plastic coating is not highly scratch-resistant and is not particularly resistant to the effects of heat.
• The same applies to waterproof pots from the *Ceramano* waterproof series as for powder-coated items; these may also only be used for floristic purposes.
• Finally, we would like to point out that our pots, bowls and saucers are ceramic products with a high degree of so-called open porosity.

When in contact with food, the relevant hygiene standards must be observed in order to avoid illnesses caused by a lack of cleanliness. This includes thorough cleaning before and after use with hot water and suitable detergents!
