Pots and Saucers
With the right saucer, a pot and a plant become a perfect unit. As a manufacturer of planters with over 100 years of tradition and experience, Spang thinks ahead: The saucers made of glazed or impregnated ceramic not only complement the look, but also protect against waterlogging and combine functionality with design.
Clay Feet
How to use clay feet correctly: To ensure your pots survive the winter safely, they insulate the vessels from the cold ground. Spang combines decades of experience with innovative solutions – clay feet minimize frost damage, enable better water drainage, and extend the lifespan of the ceramic.
Why the right saucer is essential for healthy plants
Only with the right saucer do pots and plants form a perfect unit. For a perfect look, the saucer should match the pot size: For diameters of approximately 14 cm and above, ideally choose one that is two sizes smaller than the clay pot. For example: A 20 cm flowerpot (measured at the top inner diameter) fits well with an 18 cm saucer. For pots with narrower bases, like the Ora use smaller plates! As a rule of thumb, keep a distance of two fingers between the edge of the pot and the edge of the saucer.
The saucer is more than just a design element – … it's vital for your plants: Excess water must drain away, as waterlogging leads to a lack of oxygen in the root zone. The consequences? Roots suffocate, mold and rot spread, and the plant stunts in the long run. A glazed saucer not only catches dripping water but also protects against these risks – especially for thirsty plants that need frequent watering.
Practical tip:
If your plant needs a lot of water, choose a saucer with sufficient drainage capacity. For creative solutions (e.g., decorative bowls), you should allow excess water to drain away after watering. This way, you combine aesthetics with plant well-being – because healthy roots are the basis for lush greenery!
Clay Feet: More than just a decorative accessory
Due to their raised position, clay feet allow excess water to drain quickly and easily. This effectively prevents waterlogging – important protection for your plant's roots, which can then no longer rot.
All-round winter protection: In frosty winters, the feet act as an insulating barrier: They keep ground frost away from the pot and prevent water from accumulating and freezing in the container. This protects the clay pot from cracks and breakage due to ice formation.
Natural protection against pests: The raised base of the pot is no longer a weak point. Unwanted insects or snails can no longer penetrate, which provides additional protection for your plants.
Optimal root health: Air circulation under the pot noticeably improves – a benefit for root ventilation. Roots receive more oxygen, which can promote growth and prevent disease.
Clean surfaces, less work: Since the pot isn't placed directly on the patio, balcony, or windowsill, no stains or deposits of soil or water form underneath. Practical for minimizing dirt!
Perfect for outdoor use: Whether it's raining or intensive watering – clay feet ensure rapid water drainage. This prevents long-term damage, especially for outdoor plants.
Ideal overwintering solution: Clay feet are indispensable, especially for plants that remain outdoors. They not only protect the plant itself but also extend the lifespan of the container – year-round and weatherproof.
These advantages make clay pot feet particularly useful when plants are to overwinter outdoors, as they promote both plant health and the longevity of the container.
